How reliable are electric vehicles?

Anxiety around the range capabilities of electric vehicles makes it difficult to determine whether we’re ready for such a big switch.

However, just like any traditional petrol or diesel car, it comes down to the driver to manage it. Electric vehicles are becoming more reliable. Mechanical issues are being resolved, range capacity is being increased, and the charging infrastructure is being deployed throughout the UK to support the demand.

With so much focus being directed toward the 2030 ban on the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles, the EV infrastructure and charging technology has been heavily invested in to ensure that the transition is a smooth one.

Battery Warranty

EV manufacturers are required to take out a warranty for their batteries in case any issues arise within its 10–20-year life expectancy. Some manufacturers will provide cover on their batteries for a set period, or until the vehicle has reached 100,000 miles – depending on which comes first. Certain batteries have been known to run beyond the 150,000-mile mark.

EV and Hybrid Depreciation

The average car depreciates by 60% within the first three years, leaving owners with a residual value of 40% based on an average mileage of 10,000 miles each year. The high resale value of electric and hybrid vehicles is a contributing factor as to why they are becoming increasingly popular.

To put this into perspective, premium vehicles like Tesla, currently have a residual value of around 58%, closely followed by Volkswagens e-Golf at 51%, or the Porsche Taycan leading the way with a residual value of around 73%, after three years.

For those wanting to get the best of both worlds, hybrid manufacturers including Toyota, Volvo, and Lexus are currently retaining their value at up to 73%. Although with the 2030 ban, the residual value on petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles is likely to continue to be driven down to encourage drivers to go green and support environmental initiatives.

Are you ready to make the switch?

With the innovation of technology and investments in infrastructure, the reliability of electric and hybrid vehicles is improving, making the transition easier for those considering the switch.
